Technology

NEW YORK — The NFL and NFL Players Association are partnering with Mythical Games for the first blockchain-enabled NFL video game. The game — which will be called NFL Rivals — is slated to launch early next year. WASHINGTON — Twitter will pay a $150 million penalty and put in new safeguards to settle federal regulators’ allegations that the social platform failed to protect the privacy of users’ data over a six-year span. Bold but vague pronouncements about climate change and Russia's war in Ukraine. WASHINGTON — The warning signs were there for anyone to stumble upon, days before the 18-year-old gunman entered a Texas elementary school and slaughtered 19 children and two teachers.

Information Science

This future revolution has been explored in films, novels, and video games, which have predicted the creation of many inventions, as well as foreseeing future events. Humans have already made some of the first steps toward achieving the GNR revolution. Humanity then progressed to the development of the printing press, the telephone, the computer, and then the Internet. Computers consist of a central processing unit and storage devices. As a result of the continual focus in the research of processors and storage devices, technological developments have not only increased information exchange, but have also allowed people to pave the road for self-regulated and self-operating technology. Technology is the result of accumulated knowledge and application of skills, methods, and processes used in industrial production and scientific research.

In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, two further developments enforced the hierarchy. First, the definition of a clear category of ‘fine arts’ split aesthetic creativity away from the mere craft skills of the mechanical arts. Second, the relationship of ‘science’ to industry was subject to considerable boundary work as scientists and engineers professionalized. For engineers, especially American engineers, ‘applied science’, along with its higher status, could be claimed as their own autonomous body of knowledge.

Technology And Analytics

Technologies, especially scientific instruments, simultaneously invoke and substantiate scales. We can still research the richness of ‘technology’ as an actors’ category while sharpening and thinking with ‘technology’ as an analytical category. Recent discoveries and ingenuity has allowed us to create robotics in the form of Artificial Intelligence, as well as in the physical form of robots. Artificial intelligence has been used for a variety of purposes, including personal assistants in a smart phone, the first of which was Siri, released in the iPhone 4S in 2011 by Apple. Some believe that the future of robotics will involve a 'greater than human non-biological intelligence.' This concept can be compared to that of a 'rogue AI,' an artificial intelligence that has gained self-awareness, and tries to eradicate humanity.

It might sound like something from a sci-fi show, or something that has to run on electricity. Technology makes us think of the very complex, but energy doesn't have to be complex. At the same time, this new technology replaced other medical devices and could thereby create savings, at least in theory.

So, basically, whenever we use our scientific knowledge to achieve some specific purpose, we're using technology. Technology usually involves a specific piece of equipment, but that equipment can be incredibly simple or dazzlingly complex. It can be anything from the discovery of the wheel, all the way up to computers and MP3 players. To make sense of Schatzberg’s call to arms, we need to pay close attention to how he defines the two ‘sharply diverging traditions’ of talking about technology. Across the two millennial span of his history, Schatzberg places commentators in one or other of the camps. On the one side is the ‘instrumental approach’, which adopts the language of means and ends and which thereby ‘portrays technology as a narrow technical rationality, uncreative and devoid of values’.

In its simplest terms, blended learning combines traditional, teacher-to-student lessons with technology-based instruction. Increasingly, schools are moving to provide students with their own laptop computer, netbook, or digital tablet. Schools purchased more than 23 million devices for classroom use in 2013 and 2014 alone. In recent years, iPads and then Chromebooks (inexpensive Web-based laptops) have emerged as the devices of choice for many schools.

To support schools in building and paying for these networks, the FCC in 1996 established a program known as the E-rate. Fees on consumers’ phone bills fund the program, which has paid out more than $30 billion since its inception. An overtly anti-technological treatise is Industrial Society and Its Future, written by Theodore Kaczynski and printed in several major newspapers as part of an effort to end his bombing campaign of the techno-industrial infrastructure. Taken to extreme, some argue that technicism is the belief that humanity will ultimately be able to control the entirety of existence using technology. In other words, human beings will someday be able to master all problems and possibly even control the future using technology. Some, such as Monsma, connect these ideas to the abdication of religion as a higher moral authority. The earliest stone tools were crude, being little more than a fractured rock. In the Acheulian era, beginning approximately 1.65 million years ago, methods of working these stone into specific shapes, such as hand axes emerged.

The prehistoric invention of shaped stone tools and the discovery of how to control fire increased the sources of food that were available to human beings through cooking procedures that eliminated almost all disease-causing pathogens in food sources. The subsequent Neolithic Revolution quadrupled the sustenance available from a usable territory through the development of farming technologies. The use of tools by early humans was partly a process of discovery, partly of evolution. Early humans evolved from a race of foraging hominids which were already bipedal, with a brain mass approximately one third that of modern humans.

Another big—and often overlooked—aspect of infrastructure is what’s known as interoperability. Essentially, the term refers to common standards and protocols for formatting and handling data so that information can be shared between software programs.

Many, such as the Luddites and prominent philosopher Martin Heidegger, hold serious, although not entirely, deterministic reservations about technology (see "The Question Concerning Technology"). Scientific advances and the discovery of new concepts later allowed for powered flight and developments in medicine, chemistry, physics, and engineering. The rise in technology has led to skyscrapers and broad urban areas whose inhabitants rely on motors to transport them and their food supplies.

Yet even for a recent English word ‘technology’ has come to embrace often conflicting meanings. First, I will offer a summary of Eric Schatzberg’s important new opus Technology, which untangles and clarifies the history of ‘technology’ and its cognates as actors’ categories. Second, I will conduct a critical analysis, arguing that Schatzberg, while helpfully placing past ways of thinking about technology into two camps, ones he calls the ‘cultural’ and ‘instrumental’ approaches, makes a misstep when he favours the former over the latter. The human race's use of technology began with the conversion of natural resources into simple tools.
